R.L. Armstrong was an American actor who was best known for his roles in films such as The Great White Hope (1970), The Cowboys (1972), and The Sting (1973). He was born in Mexia, Texas, and began his career in the 1950s, appearing in television shows such as The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin and Gunsmoke. In the 1960s, Armstrong began appearing in films, including The Great White Hope, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in The Cowboys, The Sting, and The Longest Yard. Armstrong was married to actress and singer Della Reese from 1969 until his death in 2012. He had two children, a son and a daughter. Armstrong died on August 16, 2012, at the age of 87. He was survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
